Terms and definitions

Plain-language definitions for the terms you'll see on EnDAO.

Some Groups use different words for these things. A Trust calls Decisions “Resolutions.” A Donor Fund calls them “Grants.” A Congregation calls them “Motions.” Different label, same thing.

Activity: The running record of everything that happens in a Group: Decisions created, votes cast, members added, treasury transactions, settings changed.
Approval threshold (Decisions): The share of For votes a Decision needs to pass, counted against For plus Against. The default is a simple majority (51%), so an exact tie does not pass; a Group can ask for two-thirds (67%), three-quarters (75%) or unanimous (100%) instead. Set per Group.
Approval threshold (Treasury): The number of signers required before a treasury transaction can move forward, for example, 2-of-3 means any 2 of the 3 signers need to sign.
Area: A slice of the Group's business (Finance, Membership, or Compliance) that a Role's authority can be scoped to. Areas only show up once a Group actually narrows a Role this way.
DAO: Short for “Decentralized Autonomous Organization”: a Group whose rules and shared funds are governed collectively by its members rather than a single operator. Most Groups on EnDAO don't need to identify as one. The mechanics work the same way either way.
Decision: A formal proposal members vote on: funding requests, policy changes, anything the Group decides together.
Discussion: A conversation attached to a Group or to a specific Decision.
For / Against / Abstain: The three vote options on a Decision. For supports passing. Against opposes. Abstain counts toward quorum but doesn't take a side.
Group: An organization on the platform. Could be a community fund, a trust, a partnership, a chapter network: any kind of group that makes decisions together and manages shared money and assets.
Invitation: A link that lets someone join a Group. Sent by an Owner or, if the Group allows it, by an existing member, though only an Owner's invitation admits someone the moment they accept it. See Joining and Inviting.
Member: A person who belongs to a Group.
Owner role: The one Role that carries full authority over a Group: it can change settings, manage members, and take administrative actions. Every Group always has at least one Owner, and the last one can't be removed.
Pass requirement: An extra bar a Decision can carry beyond quorum and pass share, for example “Against must be at most 0% of votes cast.” A Decision can carry several; every one of them has to be met.
Protector: An emergency oversight role for fiduciary structures: trusts, family offices, and similar arrangements. What a Protector can do today is close a vote early. The role is deliberately narrower than Owner — a Protector pulls that specific lever and can't use the ordinary admin screens an Owner uses day to day. Groups that need this role activate it in Settings, and every action it takes is logged. Most Groups never use this.
Quorum: The share of a Group's active members who have to vote before a Decision's result counts — a percentage, not a headcount. Like requiring minimum attendance at a board meeting. A new Group starts at 51%, and an Abstain counts towards it.
Role: A named office, Treasurer for example, that carries a specific bundle of permissions. Every member automatically wears the Group's Member role, and every Group can vary what it includes; comment and vote are the one floor every membership always carries.
Signer: A member authorized to approve treasury transactions.
Space: A smaller Group nested inside a larger one, with its own members, its own record, and its own Decisions. See Groups Inside Groups.
Template: A starting point for a new Group. Templates set sensible defaults for common kinds of groups. See Templates for the full list.
Treasury: The shared account where a Group holds and manages its money and shared assets: funds, restricted gifts, holdings, and the record of what the Group owns together.
Voting period: The time window a Decision stays open for voting. Set per Group.
